Building on the commitment of Gharana Arts to educate and increase awareness of Indian Classical Arts in Canada, the Sangeet Concert Series welcomes you to participate in a series of concerts intended for all ages, and especially welcoming Canadian audiences, who may be curious about these beautiful arts.

 

 

Fall Showcase: Serene Strings of the Santoor

A folk instrument from the scenic valley of Kashmir, the Santoor has carried the melodies of a civilizations steeped in culture and serenity. This performance will feature the dazzling performance of India’s Pt. Satish Vyas, a legend in his own right, and senior deciple of Pt. Shiv Kumar Sharma. Pt. Sharma rescued this instrument and brought to it the classical influences of Hindustani Sangeet. We are proud to present Pt. Satish Vyas for this first installment of the Sangeet Concert Series, accompanied on the Tabla by Ravi S. K. Singh.

Pt. Satish Vyas

Born on 16th November 1952, Satish started learning vocal music from his father at the age of 14 as a result of listening to a Santoor recital. Although his initial grounding took place in the idiom of his father’s lingo as it were, it was to Santoor that young Satish’s heart was set. At the request of his father, Pandit Shiv Kumar Sharma took Satish on as his disciple.

Pandit Satish Vyas has been a regular concert artist for the last more than 25 years or so, performing and recording all over the world, more extensively in the USA, UK & Europe, Japan and Australasia. In 1997, he was the only non-Western instrumentalist invited to perform in Venice, Italy at the “Mostra Mozart Festival”,organised by the prestigious European Mozart Foundation. Vyas had also manifested his versatility by performing as a “guest musician” with the Jazz / World Music Fusion Group, “Silk” accompanying the renowned vocalist Shankar Mahadevan, the Percussion maestro Sivamani, well known Composer /Pianist / Keyboard artiste Louis Banks and Karl Peters (Bass Guitar) at a Barbican Centre concert in London few years back.  He also had the privilege of performing at the world famous EDINBURGH Festival in Scotland.

The Government Of India has honoured Pandit Satish Vyas with the most prestigious civilian award Padma Shri in 2003.

Recently in October 2010 he was bestowed upon with KUMAR GANDHARVA RASHTRIYA SAMMAN by Kumar Gandharva Foundation.

 

Ravi S. K. Singh

Ravi began his studies in Tabla with Smt. Hem Mathur in 1993, at the India School of Dance Music and Theatre in Winnipeg, Canada. He participated in numerous festivals all across Canada including the Pan-American Games, the Halifax Multicultural Festival, and the Ottawa Tulip Festival. In 2003 Ravi was awarded the Senior Arts Fellowship from the Shastri-Indo Canadian Institute to study in India. He was fortunate to begin his studies in India under the guidance of famed Tabla maestro, Pandit Kumar Bose. A living legend, Pt. Bose is one of the most dynamic and influential classical Tabla players of today.

Ravi has been fortunate to have played all over India, North America, the Caribbean and Europe. He has also been privileged to accompany many great artists including, Pt. Bachanlal Mishra, Pt. Ramesh Misra, Pt. Bhawani Shankar, Shri Ratan Bharti and Shri Ranajit Sengupta.
